Locally loved cafés perfect for a low-key first date (or a casual catch-up)
I’m frequently asked, by both local and out-of-town clients, for date spot recommendations. The same cozy ambiance, flattering light, and inviting energy that make a great backdrop for a photoshoot, also make the perfect setting for a date. As an Old Town resident and online dating app photographer who’s spent years scouting the area for great photoshoot locations, I have a whole list of local favorites I’m happy to share!
I’m putting together a multi-part guide to my favorite first date spots around town, and today, I’m starting with one of the easiest, most versatile options: the classic coffee date.
There’s something so appealing about a first date over coffee—easy, low-pressure, and just enough time to see if there’s a connection. Fortunately, Old Town is full of charming cafés that make it easy to relax, be yourself, and enjoy great conversation.
Here are 7 of my favorite spots for a coffee date:
☕ 1. Tatte Bakery & Café
515 King St, Alexandria, VA 22314
Bright, airy, and effortlessly stylish, Tatte is known for its gorgeous pastry displays, Mediterranean-inspired menu, and warm service. The black-and-white interior feels modern yet welcoming, and the umbrella-covered patio is perfect for a sunny day date or a lingering brunch.
My favorite breakfast or late afternoon order: Try the latte with the cinnamon and pecan rose or the ham and cheese croissant with Dijon mustard.
☕ 2. LaPluma Coffee & Wine Bar (New!)
1000 Cameron St, Alexandria, VA 22314
A chic, two-story Latin American café and wine bar with major date potential. Start with a cortado on the sunny patio or head upstairs to the cozy wine lounge if things go well. Whether you’re keeping it casual or lingering longer, this spot makes it easy to pivot.
☕ 3. The Greenery
1023 Queen St, Alexandria, VA 22314
Tiny but full of personality, this eco-friendly café is bright, quirky, and full of charm. The playful artwork, cool lighting, and fun sticker-covered decor make it feel personal and relaxed. Seating is limited inside, but the outdoor tables are perfect for a laid-back, breezy vibe.
Bonus: They sell plant clippings and locally roasted beans—cute date activity idea?
☕ 4. Fontaine Caffe & Crêperie
119 S Royal St, Alexandria, VA 22314
This cozy French café brings major bistrot energy with its string-lit outdoor tables, crêpes, and warm ambiance. It’s an ideal brunch date spot—unfussy but romantic, and tucked just enough off the beaten path of King Street to feel like a little escape.
Don’t miss: Their savory crêpes and classic café au lait.
☕ 5. Misha’s Coffee
917 King Street & 6 Prince Street, Alexandria, VA 22314
A true Old Town staple, Misha’s is known for roasting its own beans daily and its welcoming, community-first vibe. Both locations have an open, jazzy atmosphere with rotating local art and plenty of room to chat. Perfect for a no-pressure meet-up with great coffee.
☕ 6. Dolci Gelati Café
107 N Fairfax St, Alexandria, VA 22314
Espresso and gelato? Yes, please. This sweet little café is right next to Town Hall, where the Old Town Farmers’ Market pops up every Saturday. It’s a great idea for a morning date—grab a coffee and stroll the market together for a relaxed, walk-and-talk vibe.
☕ 7. St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub
529 Montgomery St, Alexandria, VA 22314
A family-owned favorite in Old Town North, St. Elmo’s has a down-to-earth, creative vibe. With indoor nooks, outdoor seating, funky art, and live music (like Thursday night jazz), it’s perfect if you’re looking for something a little less polished and a little more real. Bonus: they serve organic, locally roasted coffee and hearty bites.
